The Pond

look! a pond!

rollover photos taken by Mr. Thoman

Over the course of the last few years, students in the Environmental Club have thought of new ideas to make our garden a more hospitable environment. The idea of a pond was brought up in the earlier years of the garden. However Mr. Thoman decided it would be too time consuming, too tedious and most of all, too expensive. In 1998, we received a grant from the Hudson River Foundation. Now our funding worries were over.

The very first step that one must take before actually building a pond, is to setup a plan. Before we started building our pond, we gave it a lot of thought and planning. How large should it be? How should it be shaped? How deep should it be? Exactly where will it go?

In our pond, we have various types of wildlife. This includes dragonflies (photo to left), frogs, and fish.

Ponds typically have flora as well as fauna. When we were planning to build our pond, we decided to recreate the habitat of a typical North American pond. We picked plants that would thrive on the fringes of a pond and kept the shape of the pond conformed to the landscape. We have many kinds of flora in and around our pond such as horsetails, pickerel reeds and cattails.

So, there you have it... a good overview of our pond.
